What is the VPK program?
VPK stands for Vountary Pre-Kindergarten. It is a free program every child living in Florida is entitled to (see below for age requirements). Parents have their choice of either a 540 hour school year program or a 300 hour summer program (see below for curriculum information). There is absolutely no charge and every four year old child who lives in Florida is eligible.
How old must my child be to enroll in VPK?
A child must be 4 years of age before September 1, and reside in Florida to participate in the VPK program. Remember there is absolutely no charge to enroll your child in VPK.
What is the difference between the 540 hours and the 300 hours?
There is no difference in the content or the curriculum that is used. However, there is a difference in who can teach the Summer VPK. Because the summer program is condensed into a 300 hour program the legislators feel that a Certified Teacher with at least a Bachelors degree must instruct the summer class.
What will my child learn in VPK?
VPK is more than your child learning to count and say their ABC's. The State of Florida has developed a set of standards that cover all eight domains. You can learn more about these domains and what your child will learn at http://www.elc-marion.org/en/about.
